Spain - Tourism figures March 2020

Coronavirus ensures first big minus

Spain has been on lockdown since March 15 which is why the tourism statistics take only the first two weeks of March into account.

2,02 million foreign tourists visited Spain in March 2020, which is a minus of 64,3 % compared to March 2019.   

The Britons rank first with 397,117 tourists (-64,2 %), followed by the French people with 288,903 tourists (-57,3 %), and the Germans rank 3rd with 277,862 tourists (-65,7 %).   

January to March 2020  

From January to March, 2,02 million Britons (-27,8 %) travelled to Spain. The French people rank 2nd with 1,35 million tourists (-20,1 %), followed by the Germans with 1,31 million tourists (-29,9 %).  

Spain registered a total of 10,58 million foreign visitors between January and March 2020 which corresponds to a minus of 25,6 %.

- 317,588 tourists came from Belgium (- 24,7 %) 
- 220,356 tourists came from Ireland (- 27,7 %) 
- 459,802 tourists came from the Netherlands (- 15,3 %) 
- 899,578 tourists came from Scandinavia (- 28,9 %) 
- 198,951 tourists came from Switzerland (- 29,2 %) 
- 347,645  tourists came from the USA (- 34,3 %)   

Andalusia ranks 3rd among Spain's most popular holiday destinations, right behind Catalonia and the Canary Islands.  

Andalusia registered a total of 1,53 million foreign visitors which is a minus of 25,0 %. 

The Canary Islands registered a total of 2,73 million foreign visitors which is a minus of 25,7 %.     

The Balearic Islands registered a total of 405,470 foreign visitors which is a minus of 41,4 %.  

Catalonia registered a total of 2,24 million foreign visitors which is a minus of 30,4 %.     

Valencia registered a total of 1,22 million foreign visitors which is a minus of 20,0 %.    

Economy

According to the Spanish Institute of Statistics, tourists generated a revenue of 11,71 billion euros from January to March 2020 which is a minus of 23,8 %. The Britons are responsible for a turnover of 1,95 billion euros and the Germans for a turnover of 1,45 billion euros.

Andalusia achieves a turnover of 1,67 billion euros with foreign tourists which currently represents a minus of 20,5 %.
