Valencia leaving us speechless

Chlorine tablets instead of sewage plants

Not all cities and communities block their beaches whenever untreated wastewater flows into the sea contaminating the waters at the beaches. At least, the city of Valencia is honest enough to block affected beach sections when necessary. In particular, the north of the provincial capital keeps having massive issues regarding faeces and sewage.

But instead of building sewage treatment plants and whipping the sewer system into shape, Valencia has decided to lead the fight against pathogens with chlorine tablets. Big containers with chlorine tablets were set up on several beach sections where untreated wastewater is infiltrating (see pictures).

However, according to the environmental organisation Ecologistas en Acción, these measures have no effect.
