Malaga - Fuente de Piedra Lagoon

Flamingo offspring tripled

Flamingos are opportunistic breeders who only breed when their habitat offers them proper conditions. The conservation area Fuente de Piedra Lagoon is located near Antequera (province of Malaga). Since there has been plenty of rain in October and November 2018 and the lagoon was able to store enough water, 7,472 young flamingos have been registered this year. Compared to 2018, the birth rate has tripled which is an amazing result.

About 500 people gathered early in the morning, in order to ring about 600 young flamingos which is an important part of science and statistics. Because there have only been 13 rainy days since December 2018, we can only hope that the following autumn will be on its best behavior and bring plenty of rain.

The Andalusian minister of agriculture Carmen Crespo was also on site which we should give her great credit for during the holiday season.
